Spotify has brought Running Mode to Android, extending its AI-powered workout playlist feature beyond iOS, according to Engadget. The feature is available in the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden; Digital Trends reports that the rollout is for Premium subscribers using Android in those markets. Running Mode is designed to reduce the friction of building a playlist for a specific run. Rather than serving a static workout mix, the feature can generate a soundtrack around the session a user is about to do, including the workout type, planned duration, preferred genres, listening history, and cadence target, according to Digital Trends. Both Engadget and Digital Trends report that Running Mode sits inside Spotify’s Fitness Hub. Users can choose from 25 presets covering different workout structures and music genres. Digital Trends says those options include simpler runs, interval-style sessions, pyramid workouts, easier runs, and longer sessions, with durations adjustable from 10 to 90 minutes. The music controls are also more granular than a standard playlist picker. Digital Trends reports that users can select genres such as pop, EDM, country, and hip-hop, then choose whether Spotify should emphasize familiar tracks or introduce more discoveries. The outlet also says Running Mode uses Spotify’s Prompted Playlists feature, allowing users to edit the prompt that generates the soundtrack; Engadget notes Spotify began offering AI-powered Prompted Playlists in January 2026. Beat Matching is the most performance-specific part of the feature. Digital Trends reports that users can select a target beats-per-minute figure and have Spotify find tracks that fit that rhythm. The same report says 160 BPM is currently the most popular choice, while some runners may prefer roughly 170 to 180 BPM for a quicker cadence. Users can also slightly adjust playback so songs stay aligned with the selected BPM, though Digital Trends says that setting can be disabled. Running Mode can also add optional English-language coaching cues for more structured workouts, according to Digital Trends. Engadget likewise says users can enable or disable audio cues. That makes the feature part playlist generator and part lightweight workout layer, though the reporting does not say it replaces a dedicated running app or training plan. Engadget adds that Running Mode was released on iOS in late July and that it revives and expands an earlier Spotify running experiment from 2018. The outlet frames the Android launch as part of Spotify’s broader push into fitness, noting that Spotify said in April, alongside a Peloton partnership, that workout-focused playlist requests were among the most common prompts it received. Who benefits: Spotify Premium users on Android in the seven launch markets get the immediate benefit, especially runners who already use Spotify for workouts. Spotify also benefits if Running Mode increases time spent in its Fitness Hub and Prompted Playlists features. Who's exposed: Dedicated fitness audio and playlist products face a more capable default option inside Spotify, but the provided reports do not quantify any competitive impact. Users outside the listed countries, non-Premium users, and non-Android users are not included in this Android rollout as described by the sources.
