Apple has backed away from changing the domain used by iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses. In a developer notice, Apple said that after “further consideration” and community feedback, Hide My Email addresses will remain on the icloud.com domain. Techmeme, citing MacRumors’ Juli Clover, framed the move as a reversal after user backlash. The reversal is narrower than it may first appear. Apple’s notice says iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will continue to use icloud.com, but a separate domain change for Sign in with Apple is still going ahead. Starting later this year, Apple says new Sign in with Apple addresses that were previously issued on privaterelay.appleid.com will instead be issued on private.icloud.com. Apple also said existing Sign in with Apple addresses on privaterelay.appleid.com will keep working and continue forwarding email without interruption. That means users with already-issued relay addresses should not need to take action based on Apple’s notice. The developer impact is more concrete. Apple told developers whose apps or websites use Sign in with Apple to make sure their account systems, email validation rules, and allowlists accept the new private.icloud.com domain in addition to the existing privaterelay.appleid.com domain. For operators, the practical risk is not the Hide My Email reversal itself, but brittle account infrastructure. Any service that hard-codes accepted Apple relay domains, blocks unfamiliar domains, or uses narrow validation logic could create sign-up or email-delivery failures once new Sign in with Apple addresses begin using private.icloud.com later this year. Who benefits: Users who objected to the Hide My Email domain change get continuity on icloud.com. Developers also get clearer guidance on which Apple private email domains their systems must support. Who's exposed: Apps and websites with strict email-domain validation or stale allowlists are exposed to avoidable account and delivery issues. The exposure is specifically around Sign in with Apple addresses moving to private.icloud.com later this year.
