Japan’s military has decided to mass-procure Terra Drone’s Terra B1 interceptor drones, according to Tom’s Hardware, which cites Terra Drone and 3D Printing Industry. The system is described as a 3D-printed, rocket-powered interceptor intended to counter one-way attack platforms. Tom’s Hardware reports that Japan’s Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency approved the deal with Terra Drone after the Terra B1 passed trials. A demonstration for Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force reportedly helped secure the procurement decision. The B1 is based on Terra Drone’s A1 model, which Tom’s Hardware says began deployment by Ukraine earlier this year. The new interceptor is being mass-produced in Japan, with the first units expected to come off domestic production lines sometime this month. Terra Drone’s B1 was chosen from designs submitted by 38 companies and evaluated against criteria including range, flight duration, distance, speed, guidance method, the number of aircraft that can be controlled at once, launch and recovery approach, integration with other systems, safety measures, and operational record. The target set is explicit: Tom’s Hardware says the interceptor is expected to counter drone threats such as Shahed-style designs and anti-radar loitering munitions including the IAI Harpy. Those are categories of one-way or loitering systems that have pushed militaries to look for lower-cost air-defense options than conventional missiles. The report frames Japan’s move as part of a wider turn toward cheaper anti-drone systems, citing recent pressure on air-defense inventories when expensive missiles are used against lower-cost drones. That cost-exchange problem is not unique to Japan, but the Terra B1 procurement suggests Tokyo is trying to build domestic capacity for a more scalable counter-drone layer.
