An unofficial version of Nvidia’s DLSS 5 is already circulating through the PC modding scene, according to The Verge, with modders testing the AI rendering technology in games including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, Control, and others. The reported path started with code for the AI upscaling technology appearing in an early-access build of NBA 2K27. The Verge says members of the RenoDX modding channel on Discord reportedly found a way to extract a DLSS “Neural Rendering” file and apply it to Control, before the effort spread to other titles. The Verge attributes earlier reporting on that extraction to Notebook Check and VideoCardz. The early examples are not subtle. The Verge describes one Control video in which Jesse Faden’s facial features change as a modder moves through DLSS 5 settings enabled by the RenoDX work. With a “Neural Uplift” setting off, her face appears smoother; with a preset turned on, the video reportedly shows more defined lines and altered facial details. Other videos cited by The Verge show similar experiments in GTA: San Andreas and Palworld. In San Andreas, the mod appears to affect CJ’s face, city textures, shadows, and lighting tone as sliders are adjusted. In Palworld, The Verge says the mod adds more definition to a character’s cartoon-styled appearance and changes shadow intensity. The trade-off, at least in these unofficial tests, appears to be performance. The Verge reports that one person testing the mod in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth said it “halves” frames per second and that switching between presets uses a large amount of video memory. In a GTA V example, The Verge says frames fall from 90 to 29 FPS as a modder changes settings. Compatibility also appears to be moving beyond the newest cards. The Verge reports that modders had the unofficial DLSS 5 build running on RTX 50-series chips, and, citing VideoCardz, says some have now gotten it working on RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 hardware as well. The leak lands against an already mixed reception for DLSS 5. The Verge says Nvidia announced DLSS 5 in March as a technology using AI to bring “photoreal lighting and materials” to game graphics in real time. Demos across Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy drew backlash from some players, who complained that characters looked generic or overly filtered. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang responded to concerns about developer intent by saying the tool “doesn’t change the artistic control,” according to The Verge. For now, this remains unofficial modder experimentation rather than a supported launch. The Verge reports DLSS 5 is set to officially arrive this fall, which means the current wave is best read as an early stress test of how the technology behaves when applied outside Nvidia’s intended release path. Who benefits: PC modders and graphics enthusiasts get early access to Nvidia’s next rendering stack, even if unofficially. Nvidia may also get broad real-world feedback before launch, though not through a controlled release channel.
