Anthropic has released an early preview of a new `/design` command in Claude Code, according to The Decoder. The feature brings a visual design step into Claude Code’s terminal and desktop app, letting developers generate interface mockups before they start writing implementation code. The workflow described by The Decoder is straightforward: a developer can ask Claude to design options for a feature, and Claude generates multiple drafts as artboards. From there, users can choose a preferred version, edit it, and then build it out. The Decoder reports that developer Nate Parrott said Claude can read the existing codebase, match the current user-interface style, and create shareable mockups as Artifacts. That matters because the feature is not framed as a separate design canvas; it is presented as part of the coding workflow already inside Claude Code. The preview also appears to borrow from Claude Design. The Decoder says the editor and prompting features from Claude Design are now built directly into Claude Code, with the resulting designs carrying over into the build step. There is still at least one early-preview limitation. The Decoder reports that designs need to be saved manually for now. Users who want to try the feature can run `claude update`, according to the same report. For engineering teams, the concrete change is modest but useful: Claude Code is moving further upstream from code generation into product-shaping work. Instead of starting with a ticket and asking an assistant to write code, a developer can now use the same tool to sketch interface directions, pick one, and then continue toward implementation. Who benefits: Developers already using Claude Code benefit most, especially when they need quick UI options that reflect an existing codebase’s style. Teams experimenting with AI-assisted prototyping may also gain a faster pre-code review step. Who's exposed: Design and engineering teams should treat the feature as a preview rather than a finished handoff system. Manual saving and the need to review generated mockups remain practical constraints.
