Dave W. Plummer’s Task Manager rewrite is now running beyond Windows. Tom’s Hardware reports that the Windows veteran has released a beta of TMOG, short for Task Manager OG, with support for modern Windows 11 systems, macOS, and Linux. The project is notable less for being another system monitor than for how it was built. According to Tom’s Hardware, Plummer says he fed Claude Code a 107-page specification for the app. The publication describes Plummer as the developer behind the original 80KB Windows Task Manager, which debuted publicly in Windows NT 4.0 in 1996. Tom’s Hardware says the project emerged during an unplanned stretch of hospital waiting-room development time while Plummer’s son was being treated for an emergency appendectomy and later readmitted for internal bleeding. Plummer reportedly shifted from an initial idea of vibe-coding a new version of Microsoft Word to a domain he knew closely: Task Manager. The early build came together quickly, by Plummer’s account. Tom’s Hardware reports that first versions of TMOG were generated on a portable M5 machine in about four and a half hours, and that Plummer asserted they worked the first time. The work then moved into fine-tuning rather than a finished, fully polished release. The beta also changes the feel of the traditional Task Manager interface. Tom’s Hardware reports that TMOG can animate at 60 Hz instead of updating once per second, and that it includes extensive visual customization options and retro-styled presets. The publication says the latest beta available at the time of writing was version 0.1.1 across supported platforms. This is still a beta and not a clean victory lap for AI-generated software. Tom’s Hardware notes that social media interactions around the announcement point to some remaining vibe-coding flaws, with Plummer responding to individual comments. The same interactions reportedly include positive feedback about the app’s responsiveness and capabilities.
