Apple’s rumored iPhone Ultra may arrive without the accessory that would make it feel most like a small tablet. Tom’s Guide, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, reports that Apple probably will not announce a new Apple Pencil for the device at its September 9 “Surprise and shine” event. The device itself remains framed as an expected launch, not a confirmed product. Tom’s Guide says Apple is expected to use the event to show its first foldable smartphone, referred to in the item as the iPhone Ultra. The reported stylus plan was specific. According to Tom’s Guide’s summary of Gurman’s report, the iPhone Ultra Apple Pencil would have been shorter than existing versions, sized to match the phone’s height. It also reportedly would have attached magnetically to the side of the phone for storage and charging. That design would have created a different tradeoff than on the iPad. Tom’s Guide notes that a side-mounted stylus could make the larger phone less comfortable to hold while the Pencil is charging. The more material issue may be the display. Gurman reportedly said the stylus would leave “unsightly marks” on the iPhone Ultra’s delicate inner screen, which Tom’s Guide says could be one reason Apple is not launching it alongside the phone. Tom’s Guide also says the report cited another consideration: avoiding a conflict with Steve Jobs’ anti-stylus vision for the original iPhone.
