Microsoft has begun rolling out a fix for a Windows 11 issue that caused crashes and gaming problems on some PCs, according to BleepingComputer. The report says affected users saw games fail to launch or freeze with EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION errors. The issue was previously tied by Microsoft to games including ARC Raiders, MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, and The Finals on systems running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, BleepingComputer reports. Although the August 2026 Windows updates were initially suspected, Microsoft later pointed to peripherals or internal device components with RGB lighting features. According to the report, Microsoft said those RGB-capable devices can install drivers or code components with file names similar to inpoutx64. Microsoft has now identified inpoutx64.sys as the driver causing the issue and is rolling out a block that prevents the driver from loading on affected devices. The current fix is targeted: BleepingComputer says Microsoft’s release health update describes a block for devices where the inpoutx64 driver is enabled and ARC Raiders is installed. When applied, Windows disables the driver, shows users a message explaining the disablement, and then allows the game to launch normally, according to Microsoft’s update as quoted by the outlet. The fix is being distributed to Windows consumer and business devices that are not managed by IT departments. BleepingComputer reports that users need to restart their systems for the change to apply. The rollout began on August 26, 2026, at 6 PM PT and may take up to 24 hours to reach all affected devices. Microsoft also plans to include the driver block in the September 2026 Windows security updates and future releases, according to the report. For enterprise-managed devices, where the fix will not propagate automatically, Microsoft has shared a temporary workaround; BleepingComputer’s summary notes Microsoft does not currently expect disabling the relevant registry key to cause unintended behavior, and says administrators can restore the key if they want to re-enable the driver. This is not the first recent Windows 11 gaming compatibility issue Microsoft has had to unwind. BleepingComputer notes that Microsoft previously removed upgrade blocks affecting games including Star Wars Outlaws, Assassin’s Creed, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Asphalt 8: Airborne, and in January 2025 lifted a compatibility hold after fixing an Auto HDR bug that broke some games on Windows 11 24H2 devices.
