OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra, its next major model, according to The Verge. The company is pitching Astra as a broad capability jump across cybersecurity, professional work, software engineering, science, and computer use, while also emphasizing stronger controls around how the model can be used. The notable designation is security-related. The Verge reports that Astra is the first OpenAI model the company has classified as meeting its “critical cybersecurity capability threshold,” a label OpenAI had announced earlier in the week. That makes the launch a product milestone for OpenAI. OpenAI president Greg Brockman framed the model in unusually sweeping terms during a Thursday press briefing, according to The Verge. He said that if people later look back to identify when artificial general intelligence was created, “it might be about this model,” and added that he personally thinks “we are now in the AGI era.” Those remarks are OpenAI’s characterization, not an independently validated technical benchmark in the provided material.
